Regulars rave about the burgers, which are truly the heart and soul of Dave and LaVerne's. Vernon Lemky’s praise of the 2 pm happy hour burger perfectly captures the magic: a patty cooked to perfection, crowned with fresh, vibrant toppings, and accompanied by fries so crispy and flavorful that ketchup becomes wholly unnecessary. Colin Mousseau’s glowing review of the Oklahoma smashed burger and its impeccable crispy fries drenched in rich gravy underscores just how addictive these comfort foods become.
The diner’s menu also includes generous servings of shareable favorites like Bacon Cheese Fries, Chili Cheese Fries, and their signature Poutine, each crafted to deliver layers of bold, indulgent flavors. Pair your meal with a carefully curated selection of beers—from the venerable Budweiser and Corona to the smooth Guinness—or elevate your dining experience with a glass of premium Louis M. Martini Cabernet Sauvignon for a refined finish.
Customers frequently comment on the warm hospitality and upbeat service that complement the excellent food. Whether celebrating a birthday, as Coleen Balanon did with an unforgettable night featuring oversized portions and a celebratory brownie gift, or simply unwinding with friends over boozy milkshakes and lively banter, the atmosphere here is genuinely uplifting and inclusive. The open layout allows the buzz of happy diners to fill the space with energy without ever feeling overwhelming.
While some visitors like Andre Uncharted note that prices may seem higher when compared strictly within the area, most agree the quality, ambiance, and portion sizes justify the value. The busy yet efficient service ensures plates arrive piping hot and satisfying, even on the most crowded evenings. For those craving a true taste of Winnipeg’s best kept diner secret, Dave and LaVerne’s offers not just a meal, but a memorable experience that tantalizes all senses, creating a modern classic that invites repeat visits and warm recommendations.

Now this was nice. Had the 2pm happy hour burger, and oh, what a burger it was. The patty was excellent, and the toppings fresh. The fries were FANTASTIC. Did NOT need ketchup whatsoever (personally the highest praise I can give a fry). I also had a soup that was super delicious and PACKED with meat.

We went here a few weeks ago for my bday dinner and I highly recommend this restaurant! The decor is exactly what you expect for a diner and it was very clean inside. The staff had sang happy bday to me and gifted a huge brownie with ice cream. Staff were genuinely nice. Their servings were huge. The Cajun Arancini was tasty and the Prime Rib Burger was perfectly seasoned and the dip made it better. The bacon cheese fries were also a favourite. Can't wait to go back and try more dishes.

This was a first time visit to this location with my guest and despite some apprehension based on the exterior...not exactly a selling feature, we decided to give this place a try. Our thinking was that this was a "greasy spoon"...we thought wrong!! From the moment you walk through the door, you are transported into a 50's vibe diner with chrome trimmed tables and chairs, pictures of couples and families from an earlier time, and vinyl seats. While there wasn't a jukebox to complete the picture, the tables were full and the conversations were lively. We thought that we had a "Back to the Future" moment and thought that Biff was going to walk through the door next! My guest started off with the chocolate shake...it was served in a proper milkshake glass, and they left the metal cup to finish the extra amount that was used to make the absolutely delicious drink. I ordered the Reuben with a soup and fries, while my guest had the buttermilk chicken fingers and poutine. We were not disappointed with either choice. If there was to be a neutral comment, and I did share this with the manager who checked on every table, is the lack of a pickle with the Reuben and the odd addition of the toasted bread that accompanied the chicken fingers...a side of slaw probably would have been a better pairing IMHO. Finally, what stood out to us was the service. Our server introduced herself, took time to identify the daily specials and then gave us the space and time to decide what to order. Friendly, respectful, and genuinely happy to be working there. Will we return? Absolutely!!

Yah it’s alright. Food was okay. Venue’s unique look and the quality of the serving staff are its strong qualities. Ingredient quality of the dishes-to-value seems a bit mismatched and pricey, but only when compared to other venues within the same price range. However, gotta consider there are not a lot of options in this area either - so it is what it is. Patio was decent as well. Have visited a few more times recently - inside is a great atmosphere. Reuben and chicken dishes are pretty good. Staff are friendly and on point.

Very happy that burger week introduced us to such a delightful hidden gem! Their featured burger dish was incredible, and their boozy milkshakes are to die for. The ambiance was so charming, I especially adored how they had retro looking TVs playing real-time sports (in color)! Would definitely love to come back and try the rest of what they have to offer.

6 of us ate here for the first time today. We had wonderful meals that came out quickly even though it was busy in there. The only thing I wasn't a huge fan of was the Mac and cheese, the sauce was very thick and sticky. Our server, Daniel was great, attentive and personable. It was loud in there from people talking but it's an open concept so to be expected. Milkshakes are great to share with another person. Overall good experience, glad to see a good restaurant in Southdale!

Had the Oklahoma smashed burger and if you’re into super crispy fries this is your place to be plus the gravy was amazing. 10 out of 10. Highly recommend definitely a bang for your buck. A bit of a wait but worth every second, make reservations to beat the line.

We throughly enjoyed our lunch today! The service was excellent, very friendly/helpful staff. The restaurant (and bathroom) is clean and lovely! The food came so fast, we barely had to wait. It was hot and delicious. The assistant general manager checked in on all tables to make sure customers were happy with what they ordered. The shakes were delicious too! Some items that enhanced our experience: -they brought a water jug to our table so we had water throughout our meal. LOVED and appreciated this! -plastic straws - so appreciate the plastic straws because the paper ones would have disintegrated in our milk shakes -take out bag to take our leftovers home in. So helpful because the portions are deliciously large, we left with lots of leftovers containers! -take out cups for our milkshakes because we couldn’t finish them while dining in They’ve thought about everything and we highly recommend this restaurant!
